It’s a once a week injectable medicine that, along with diet and exercise may help improve blood sugar, suppress appetite, slow GI motility making you feel full longer and prevent sugar spikes. It can cause significant weight loss and reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The dosing varies and can be titrated and managed according to effectiveness and presence or absence of side effects. Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, abdominal bloating, fatigue and dizziness. Semaglutide is not a miracle drug. And it’s not for everyone. The process begins with a consultation to determine if you are an appropriate candidate. Office visits are $75.00 and follow up visits are required to manage dosing and mitigate side effects. You are not a candidate for semaglutide if you have a history of medullary thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MENS2) or significant gallbladder disease. It means it’s first in its class to significantly reduce glycemic levels, improve insulin sensitivity, improve lipid metabolism and reduce body weight by more than 20%!! Like Semaglutide, this is also a once a week injectable medication with varying doses titrated to effectiveness while minimizing side effects. Similar side effects can be seen such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal bloating, fatigue, heartburn and increased pancreatic enzymes. Studies have shown that tirzepatide may lead to more significant weight loss than semaglutide. However, there are some limitations to these findings as these two medications are not dosed in the same manner. Some report better appetite suppression with tirzepatide over semaglutide. Behavior modification, improved food choices and a healthy lifestyle still need to be employed in addition to weekly injectable medication. The process is the same whether we opt for semaglutide or tirzepatide as far as office visits and follow up.
